The first one was held in 1924, and not surprisingly Charlie was the winner. Over the next 6 years he won the championship 3 times, and would finish in the top 5 for the next 10 years. He became the biggest star in the black racing circuit.

It ran annually from 1924 to 1936, and ended partially because of the Great Depression and partially because of a violent career ending accident involving 4 time winner Charlie Wiggins, costing him his right leg and eye.
