WebOne of those characters (old soldier) comes with 20 in all combat stats which is enough to survive early game raids up to black dragon ninjas. The only issue with a pure colony start is that toughness is too low to handle raids. Genmod also adds craftable books so yeah you can just do a pure isolated craftable colony thing.
